April 28, 2018 marked the 40th anniversary of Afghanistan’s civil war. Support from terrorist groups from neighboring nations, ineffectual governance, high levels of corruption, and a weak rule of law all contribute to the ongoing unrest. Despite four decades of war, Afghans continue to have faith that peace is possible. As a result of conflict, Afghanistan has become a failed state with a fragile security environment and a struggling national economy ranking 9th out of 178 countries in the Fragile States Index
